Throwback Thursday – Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James

FSOG 1

So yes, today is Throwback Thursday.  But, it is also the day we get to finally see the trailer for the upcoming, I can’t wait to see, movie adaptation of the book Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James.

Here it is!  View the trailer here.

Excited….Yes!  My very own inner goddess is doing the happy dance!

happy-dance

I decided that my Throwback Thursday post should be in honor of Christian Grey.

I picked out some of my favorite lines from the first book in the series, Fifty Shades of Grey.

Enjoy!

Some of My Favorite Lines!

“I am going to have coffee with Christian Grey… and I hate coffee.”

“We aim to please Miss Steele”

“What is it about elevators?”

“I want you sore, baby,” he murmurs, and he continues his sweet, leisurely torment, backward, forward. “Every time you move tomorrow, I want you to be reminded that I’ve been here. Only me. You are mine.”

“Are you smirking at me, Mr. Grey?” I ask sweetly. Pompous ass.”

“Inside me! I gasp, and all the muscles deep in my belly clench. My inner goddess is doing the dance of the seven veils.”

“Why does he have such an unnerving effect on me? His over-whelming good looks maybe? The way his eyes blaze at me? The way he strokes his index finger against his lower lip? I wish he’d stop doing that.”

“I’ve never wanted more, until I met you.”

“Who’s he kidding? He’s no gentleman. He has my panties”

“You have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your prince”

Feel free to leave some of your favorite lines from this book.  Go ahead, comment away.

I can’t wait for February 2015!

Throwback Thursday – The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

Throwback Thursday

I love looking for books to showcase on my Throwback Thursday posts.  This week, I decided to take it back to the early school years.   The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle was one of my older son’s favorite books when he was in Pre-K.  I can’t remember how many times I read this book to him before going to bed.  I love Eric Carle’s books.  This one is my favorite as well.  For that reason, it made my Throwback Thursday post this week.

I consider this book to be a classic and should be part of every child’s early reading experiences.  It still has a special place on my bookshelves after all these years.

Suitable for children, this title covers colorful collage illustrations and its deceptively simply, hopeful story. It features die-cut pages and finger-sized holes to explore.

Mary soon begins transforming it into a thing of beauty–unaware that she is changing too. But Misselthwaite hides another secret, as mary discovers one night. High in a dark room, away from the rest of the house, lies her young cousin, Colin, who believes he is an incurable invalid, destined to die young. Throwback Thursday – Fun with Dick and Jane

Throwback Thursday: Fun with Dick and Jane

How many of you remember this series of books?  I recently found several of them that I purchased at an antique shop in St. Augustine, Florida.  I shared them with my students who found the books to be quite amusing.  I never read them when I was in school.  Did you?

With innocent entertaining exploits and simple repetitive declarations, these charming characters helped millions of Americans learn to read.

These books were actually used between the 1930’s-1970’s in schools.  I can’t imagine using these books to teach students today.

“Look, Jane, ” said Dick.  “Here is something funny.  Can you guess what it is?”

Do you remember any of your childhood readers?

Feel free to comment.

Happy Thursday!

Throwback Thursday – The Giving Tree

Throwback Thursday

THE GIVING TREE COVER

Today’s book, The Giving Tree was selected by my fourth graders.  Since we have been celebrating Earth Day all week, this book was one of our read alouds.  I have always loved Shel Silverstein and this is one book I truly enjoy reading.  If you haven’t read this gem, you should.

Synopsis

‘Once there was a tree…and she loved a little boy.’
So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein.
Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk…and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave.
This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein has created a moving parable for readers of all ages that offers an affecting interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another’s capacity to love in return.

Throwback Thursday – Charlotte’s Web

Happy Thursday!

charlotte's web

Today’s Throwback Thursday read is the children’s classic Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White.  This book brings back memories of my own elementary school days.  This was one book that my third grade teacher loved.  She started the school year off with it as our first read aloud.  I also recall checking this book out at the library several times.

Still today, my own students enjoy taking this book off of my shelves and reading it.  It is a story about friendship and loyalty.  It also introduces children to the concept of death.  Charlotte’s Web is also the type of book that you interpret differently when you read it as an adult.  It truly is a great book.

Did you enjoy this classic as a child or adult?

Quotes

“Wilbur didn’t want food, he wanted love. He wanted a friend –someone who would play with him.”

“Your success in the ring this morning was, to a small degree, my success.”

“She was in a class by herself. It is o is not often that someone comes along who is a true friend and a good writer. Charlotte was both.”

Throwback Thursday – Holes by Louis Sachar

Today’s Throwback Thursday book selection is Holes by Louis Sachar.  My students recently read this book and really loved it.  I read this to my older son when he was younger and enjoyed watching the movie with him as well.  This is one of the books that I keep on my bookshelf at school.  It is a most enjoyable 5 star read.

And so, Stanley Yelnats seems set to serve an easy sentence, which is only fair because he is as innocent as you or me. But Stanley is not going where he thinks he is. Camp Green Lake is like no other camp anywhere. It is a bizarre, almost otherworldly place that has no lake and nothing that is green. Nor is it a camp, at least not the kind of camp kids look forward to in the summertime. It is a place that once held “the largest lake in Texas,” but today it is only a scorching desert wasteland, dotted with countless holes dug by the boys who live at the camp.

The trouble started when Stanley was accused of stealing a pair of shoes donated by basketball great Clyde “Sweetfeet” Livingston to a celebrity auction. In court, the judge doesn’t believe Stanley’s claim that the shoes fell from the sky onto his head. And yet, that’s exactly what happened. Oddly, though, Stanley doesn’t blame the judge for falsely convicting him. Instead, he blames the whole misadventure on his “no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather.” Thanks to this benighted distant relative, the Yelnats family had been cursed for generations. For Stanley, his current troubles are just a natural part of being a Yelnats.

At Camp Green Lake, the warden makes the boys “build character” by spending all day, every day, digging holes: five feet wide and five feet deep. It doesn’t take long for Stanley to realize there’s more than character improvement going on at Camp Green Lake. The boys are digging holes because the treacherous warden is searching for something, and before long Stanley begins his own search—for the truth.

Fate conspires to resolve it all—the family curse, the mystery of the holes, the drought that destroyed Green Lake, and also, the legend of Kissing Kate Barlow, an infamous outlaw of the Wild West. The great wheel of justice has ground slowly for generations, but now it is about to reveal its verdict.

Quotes from the book:

“If only, if only, the moon speaks no reply;
Reflecting the sun and all that’s gone by.
Be strong my weary wolf, turn around boldly.
Fly high, my baby bird,
My angel, my only”

“I’m not saying it’s going to be easy. Nothing in life is easy. But that’s no reason to give up. You’ll be surprised what you can accomplish if you set your mind to it.After all, you only have one life, so you should try to make the most of it.”

Throwback Thursday – The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton

Today’s Throwback Thursday read is The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.

outsiders cover

According to Ponyboy, there are two kinds of people in the world: greasers and socs. A soc (short for “social”) has money, can get away with just about anything, and has an attitude longer than a limousine. A greaser, on the other hand, always lives on the outside and needs to watch his back. Ponyboy is a greaser, and he’s always been proud of it, even willing to rumble against a gang of socs for the sake of his fellow greasers–until one terrible night when his friend Johnny kills a soc. The murder gets under Ponyboy’s skin, causing his bifurcated world to crumble and teaching him that pain feels the same whether a soc or a greaser.

Written forty-five years ago, S. E. Hinton’s classic story of a boy who finds himself on the outskirts of regular society remains as powerful today as it was the day it was written.

How many of you read this book?  Did you watch the movie?

This is another book that takes me back to my teens.  I do recall reading and enjoying this book.  If memory serves me, I was in junior high when I read it.

*****************************************************************************************************************************************************

The movie for this book released in 1983.  The movie featured a wonderfully talented and good looking cast of guys.  (Many of these guys adorned my teenage room, right off the pages of Teen Magazine)

Yes, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Rob Lowe, C. Thomas Howell and even Tom Cruise were in this flick.

Any thoughts on The Outsiders?

I think this is a Young Adult read all teens should read.
