The show must go on, but the price of admission could be her heart.

Sick of her vagabond life in a Broadway touring company, Nicola is ready to settle down. She wants nothing more than to park her suitcase in California, put out feelers for local auditions, and leave her past firmly behind her.

Too bad her past comes knocking on her door her first day home. All six-foot-three, beautiful man of her past named Max. Stupid Max. The mistake Nicola just can’t seem to stop making.

Even before Nicola—fiery, quick-witted, beautiful Nicola—slams the door in his face, Max is in trouble. She will always be the one who got away. Three times. Which makes convincing her to play Titania to his Oberon a bit…awkward.

Though she has zero desire to re-re-rekindle an old flame, Nicola can’t turn down the chance Max is offering: a lead role with the West Coast’s premiere Shakespeare company. But when their first rehearsal kiss disintegrates into a passionate liplock, she’s questioning her sanity and tempted to jump ship—before Max can break her heart again.

Now it’s up to Max to convince her that the torch he’s been carrying is actually an eternal flame.

My Review

What do you get when you mix a Summer acting job, a second chance romance and Shakespeare?  Well, you get a Midsummer Night’s Fling by Eliza Walker.  I will be honest, I wasn’t too sure I was going to like this book at the very start.  It took me some time to really get to know and like the characters but, once it happened, the rest of the book was a real treat. I am a fan of Shakespeare and it had been quite some time since I read or was reminded of his work.  Eliza blended a clever and well written story that was a pleasant surprise from all of my other current reads.

Nicola and Max, the two main characters are actors that are reunited after several years.  They had a relationship years ago that didn’t end well.  A Summer acting job brings them together in roles that pull at their emotional and sensual strings.  This story has humor, angst, love, and a great cast both as actors and friends.  Chemistry among lovers is hard to shake and Max and Nicola definitely have it making that aspect of the book so much more enjoyable.

I will mention this, you need to be familiar with Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream to understand the roles they will play when acting.  I had to do a little refresher research to make all of the connections in my mind.  Once I did that, the story flowed, made sense to me and was brilliant.

I do love second chance romance stories and I am always the cheerleader routing for the two former lovers to come together.  I do recommend that you read the book to see what happens between these two.  I won’t spoil it for you.

I look forward to reading the rest of this series.  A Midsummer Night’s Fling is a perfect Summer Beach Read.

I gave this book 4 stars.

Eliza, congrats on your debut!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

When I imagine Hell, it’s this town in the summer months, good old Palm Springs, California. Hotter than the devil’s breath and twice as dry. I couldn’t think of anything worse than putting on a suit in this heat, even if I had one. Since I’m not even sure why he called me to his office, I show up in my board shorts and T-shirt. If he wants to see me for some mysterious purpose he wouldn’t divulge over the phone, he can take me as I am.

We never have had the money you need to get by in a town like this. My parents came here when they were young, to find work. My father, an airline mechanic, was underpaid and passed away before he could really save anything. We survive, but I wish I could do more. I couldn’t ask for a kinder mother, she looks at everything with a positive eye and sees the beauty of what’s beneath it even if it’s sugarcoated shit. She deserves the best.

The future right now seems bleak, no money for college, my job at the hotel is just enough to keep my mother and me with a roof over our heads and food on the table.

My foot pounding the pavement as I push my skateboard faster through the desert streets reminds me, I can’t even afford a car. I shake my head at the thought, flip my board up and catch it quickly and wipe my hands on my shorts as I go into the building.

Skye is sitting behind the desk and her face goes from miserable to lit up at the sight of me. Fuck, I want her so much. She deserves the best too and that’s more than I can give her. Just look at where she comes from, I can’t keep up with that. My mother, an immigrant right off the boat, could never hope to make a decent wage. Graduation is nearing, and I don’t know what I’m going to do. I can’t make a life with Skye in my parents trailer, their first and only home that my mom and I still share.

I slyly look around, seeing we’re alone. I sneak around the desk and drop to my knees in front of her.

“Get up! He’ll see you,” she says in an urgent whisper.

I give her my crooked grin, slide my hand up her skirt and rest it on her upper thigh. Her eyes get brighter as she looks around the room, recklessly I put my other hand in her curly hair and pull her head down to mine.

“Kiss me,” I tell her a breath away from her full, succulent lips.

I don’t wait, I take her lips in a hurried kiss. Just as she starts to melt for me, I pull back and love the glazed look that’s in her eyes. I playfully tap her on the nose. “We’ll finish this later,” I tell her, moving my hand up to grasp her panties. She gasps as I pull and the fabric tears easily, leaving me with her panties fisted in my hand. I give her another smile and bring them to my nose as I stand.

“You’re so gross! Give them back.” Her words the complete opposite to the smoldering look she’s giving me.

“Nope, you’ll get them later.” I give her my killer smile.

She shakes her head at me. “Why are you here?” Again she looks around the room waiting for him to appear.

“Don’t worry, he won’t chase me off, he asked me to come in.” I smile at her and puff out my chest as I mimic his voice. “I’d like to meet with you, Kid, about some business.”

Usually when I make fun of him she breaks out into a fit of giggles, not this time, her face falls. “Don’t get mixed up with him, you know he is shady as all hell.”

I grab her by the shoulders, she’s showing signs of one of her panic attacks. “Don’t worry, Skye, whatever game he’s playing, I’m sure I can handle it.” She starts shaking her head.

“No Preston, don’t play any of his games, you don’t have the cheat codes.” There’s worry written all over her face.

I pull her in close, wrapping my arms around her and look down at her upturned face. I smile, then give her forehead a quick kiss. “It’ll be okay, Detka.” I only use that nickname when I want her to smile, it’s my special name for her. As soon as the word is out, her smile brightens the room.

Someone clears their throat behind us, damn busted. I release her and turn around plastering a smile on my face, only to see he has his everlasting frown of disapproval on his. “Hello, Mr. Divine, nice to see you,” I greet him. I can feel her fist the back of my shirt, and I put a hand behind me to squeeze it, reassuring her.

“Hello, Kid, let’s go in my office.” He glances at Skye then walks into his office before me.

Once he has his back to me, I follow waddling like him and quickly turn back and blow Skye a teasing kiss before shutting the door.

I am suddenly nervous. I know he doesn’t approve of me and I really don’t care, I’ve just heard he’s a crooked player, and I don’t know what he wants with me. I wipe my hands on my shorts again, hoping my nervous gesture will go unnoticed.

“What are your plans for the future?” he begins abruptly.

“Uhhh… like college?” I stutter, running my hand through my hair.

He leans on his desk moving forward slightly. “College? A job? My daughter?”

I open my mouth, attempting to speak and then I close it again. I’ve got nothing. I don’t have any plans for a single one of them, I know I should, but I don’t, so I stare blankly at him.

“That’s what I thought.” He gives me a look of disgust. I should be used to it since he wears it whenever I’m around. Sitting back in his chair he studies me for a minute. “I have a job for you.”

I’m at a loss for words, especially since I know he doesn’t care for me.

“You speak Russian right?” he asks with a calculating gleam in his eyes.

“Yeah, why?”

“I have some business I need taken care of in Russia, I need a man on the ground.”

“Trying to get rid of me, Bob?” I know he doesn’t like the fact that his daughter and I are so close.

“No, little asshole, I’m trying to help you become something other than the desert rat you are now.” He pounds the desk with his fist.

He says that like it’s an insult, but when you’re a desert rat, you embrace it, wear the title with pride. I don’t have to listen to this shit, so I get up and without a word, head back towards his office door. But as my hand makes contact with the door handle, his words stop me cold.

“I can promise you enough money to get your mother out of that trailer and keep my daughter happy.” His tone is smug.

I grip the door handle, taking a deep, calming breath. He knew exactly what to say to get me to stop, and I turn to look at him with hope in my eyes.

“That’s what I thought,” he sneers in satisfaction when I do, then motions for me to sit back down.

He has me by the balls right now, how can I refuse? I sit down to listen to what he has to say, I mean shit what do I have to lose?

My Review

I love writing reviews for debut novels/books.  This is probably the most exciting and nerve-racking time for a new author.  Honesty is important.

I am thrilled to have been part of this experience for Nicky.  Receiving your ARC and waiting vicariously with you for your book to go live was a new experience for me as well.

Your first book Raven’s Innocence was a spectacular debut.  I enjoyed your story.  Raven, your main character is well written and extremely likable.  Grant, while complicated had an interesting dark side. He turns out to be quite mercurial and unpredictable. Your story touched on my emotions and was funny as well.  There was a perfect balance.  I love the relationship that Raven and her best friend Kat share.  Their friendly banter makes reading about them entertaining.  The story kept me interested and the ending was unexpected.  I am really looking forward to the next book.  I also hope to get more of Kat and Asher in the next book.

Entertaining, witty and the ending….

I gave this book 5 stars!

SUMMARY

Publicist Shaunna Noble is no stranger to the ego-filled dysfunction of Hollywood’s elite, but is she ready for her two biggest clients to turn into her worst nightmare?Kyle Petersen and Michelle Cooper are Hollywood royalty, everyone’s favorite celebrity couple, but while on location filming their new summer blockbuster, Kyle ambushes his wife with divorce papers and orders Shaunna to destroy Michelle in the media. Unwilling to comply, Shaunna spectacularly and publicly quits her job, humiliating Kyle in the process.
David Quinn, a struggling actor cast alongside the A-listers, is caught in the crossfire. When pictures surface of David and Michelle out on the town, media and fans rush to crown them Hollywood’s new hot couple. Kyle explodes, tensions boil over, and everyone’s lives and careers are thrown into jeopardy.
So what’s a publicist to do? Especially when Shaunna finds herself falling in love with the sexy and talented David. Can she put out fires on the set while keeping the flames burning in the bedroom?
Love, lies and passion. What happens when the naked truth is exposed?

EXCERPT

Shaunna was staying at a Radisson along with Nathan and the rest of the cast and crew. She saw David from time to time but they’d never spoken.

She’d first spotted him exercising one morning. She was about to wander into the hotel’s gym herself, but reconsidered when she saw that even at six a.m., she would not be alone. It wasn’t specifically David’s presence that changed her mind. She was simply uncomfortable working out in front of strangers.

However, she was not uncomfortable about pausing to admire one. She was certain her pony tail did nothing to hide her face should he happen to look up and make eye contact, so she went ahead and got herself a good eye full.

David hadn’t seen her and was turned completely around. He was bending over to heft some free weights and he was wearing shorts. Very short shorts. In any other context, they would have looked like something Olivia Newton John might have worn with roller skates, but on him they were just a sexy, cruel barrier between her hands and his tight cheeks. These particular shorts were white with dark blue piping. Later on, it would be all too easy for her to accidentally remember them as underwear.

As she intently studied David’s movements, Shaunna lost her sense of self and squeezed her water bottle hard enough to make it crackle. The noise was loud in the quiet hallway and she quickly bolted down the corridor, suddenly determined to enjoy a bowl of Cheerios courtesy of the well-appointed continental breakfast.

Over the next hour, Shaunna convinced herself David would not show up in the breakfast lounge, but she also opted for a second bowl of cereal and a banana, something she normally never did. And then she found herself hanging around to read the morning paper, which she also never did. As soon as she admitted to herself that she was stalling her departure, Shaunna laughed at her reflection in the napkin holder and returned to her room.

Susi Reviews – An Acute Attraction by @AJWaltersAuthor

an acute attraction

Meet… …Working single mother Isabel Chambers. She’s not a size 12 or as you’ve probably guessed, a virgin either. …Marc Sanders an attractive, successful Harvard Professor of Medicine visiting Cambridge. He has a secret past that has been well hidden until now. An Acute Attraction is a heart warming, exciting and compelling story of love and romance, full of seductive, sensual and tantalizing emotions and images, sexual exploration and passion. Isabel Chambers is an ordinary, working, single mother of two, who needs some “me” time, so, kids sorted, she books herself into a hotel for a week of rest and relaxation. Marc Sanders is an American professor at Harvard University and is in England to present research results to Cambridge University. Two people, out for adventure and excitement, meet and begin a journey of fun, thrills, lust and desire. But, is Marc all he seems to be? What is he hiding?

My Review

It’s not often that I come across a book that I instantly connect with, especially on a personal level. But, those are the books I enjoy the most.  I guess I love this book so much because the main character and I have so much in common.  An Acute Attraction by A.J. Walters is that book.

First of all, I was immediately drawn to Isabel, the female protagonist in the story because there is so much of me in her.  I too once was the single mother of two boys who would do anything just for them.  And, just like Isabel, I am an educator.  Having gone through a similar experience in my life made this a book I thoroughly enjoyed.

A.J. Walter’s debut is about a “real” woman.  Isabel is not the perfect size 0 female.  She is the real, I have lived and I know what I want out of life woman.  I don’t always read about this strong type of character so this is another reason this was so appealing to read.  The story is well written and flows perfectly.  The characters in the story are well developed and extremely likable.

Isabel is off on a weekend getaway without her boys.  (Don’t we all dream about this?)  She is ready to come out of her shell and out of her to day to day lifestyle when she meets Marc.  Ok, let me tell you about Marc.  He is a professor. Yes, thanks to Sylvain Reynard, I have a thing for professors.  (A.J. Walters, you too?)  He is handsome, successful, rich and oh so sexy.  Marc is the total package! Their meeting results in instantly chemistry.  Adding Marc to her plans makes this weekend even better.

The story is told from Isabel’s point of view so it is humorous.  There were many laughable moments throughout the book.  There are intimate moments too.  These moments of intimacy were well written leaving enough for the imagination of the reader.

This book does end with a cliffhanger.  I can’t wait to read the continuation of Isabel and Marc’s story.

Congrats to A.J. Walters on her debut!

I gave this book 5 stars!

I searched for my Marc and found this oh so sexy and handsome gentleman.  Here’s my perfect Marc.  And here is my Isabel, the “real” woman in this story.  🙂

About the Author: A.J. Walters

A J Walters is a new contemporary romance author who has just made her first appearance on to the indie circuit. Having interests in history, romance and elements of erotica, she has brought all of these together in her debut publication; An Acute Attraction.

Wanting to break the trend of size 12 virgins in books, A J Walters has introduced a new real woman in Isabel Chambers. She’s a size 18-20, working single mother who now feels is it her time to start living her life again. At the ripe young age of 39, A J Walters also wanted to show that you can experience everything that a twenty-something would.

“I saw that a 39 year old isn’t quite at retirement age for fun, sex and finding love again. There are so many women out there that can be represented in books as well as the slim, innocent and beautiful types. Don’t get me wrong I love reading books with them in, but there is so many of them around now I felt it is time for something different. I’d like to think I brought my sense of humour across in it as well. I am ditsy, I suffer from ‘foot in mouth’ syndrome, but I can also be serious and sentimental. From the feedback I’ve had, apparently it makes for a great writing voice.”

A J Walters currently lives in North Staffordshire, UK with her 2 children.

Interview with Victoria Van Tiem, Author of Love Like The Movies

I recently read one of the most entertaining romantic comedies called Love Like The Movies by Victoria Van Tiem.   After reading her witty story, I had to ask her all about it.   Here is my interview with Victoria.  If you haven’t read her book yet, be sure to get yourself a copy.  And, if you are a movie lover like I am, then I am sure that you will enjoy it.

love like the movies

Interview with Victoria Van Tiem

Susi:   First off, how long have you been writing? Is this your first book?

Victoria:  I’ve always written, but mostly short stories and only for me. LOVE LIKE THE MOVIES is my debut novel and I’m absolutely thrilled with how well it’s being received.

Susi:  Obviously, you are a big movie lover.  Where did the idea for this book come from?  (It is brilliant!!)

Victoria:
Thanks! Yes, I’m a huge movie fan. Most of my so called bucket list includes things like: be an extra in a movie: participate in a Hollywood red carpet event, be a seat warmer at an awards show. Life is short, if we don’t make these moments happen, the chance just passes us by. No, I haven’t done those exact ones yet, but I did audition for TV Land’s She’s Got The Look, a model show like Americas Next top Model for women 35 and up. Oh, I had no desire or false hope of actually being a model, but the location shoots and makeovers made this irresistible! And would you believe I even made it past the first rounds! Me, at 40 and only 5’2! Okay, they didn’t know I was only 5’2 because I was wearing 5 inch heels. A friend went with me as support, literally as support, because I couldn’t walk in my super stilts. It was over as soon as the shoes came off.  But It was comical, and fun, and an experience.

That’s where the idea really stems from, wanting those experiences. Most are within our control. We just need to push ourselves, get out there and live them. And until Jake Ryan shows up driving a Porsche and offering me cake, I guess I’ll have to write about the ones that aren’t.

Susi:   I loved all of your movie choices.  How many choices did you have before you finally made the list for the book?  What other movies were possibilities for your book?

Victoria:
I had so many! The motorcycle scene from How to Lose  a Guy In Ten days, “A little give, a little go.” Love that with Matthew McConaughey. And the thriller scene from 13 going on 30 was hilarious. But in the end, the scenes had to wrap around the story of Shane and Kenzi, because their story had to be center stage. But, yeah, narrowing them down to ten was really difficult. I did manage to reference a bunch throughout the story though.

Susi:  What was your favorite scene to write?

Victoria:
The movie scenes, of course. Taking something familiar and changing and bending it around Kenzi’s own personal story was just fun. I love the physical part of comedy as well. The treadmill war with Tonya, the Four Weddings and a Funeral mad-dash back to Kenzi’s, and the failure to Launch paintball attack and van chase. The teenager in that scene provided the best straight man to Kenzi’s insane situation.

Susi:  What was the most difficult scene to write?

Victoria:
The end. Well, let me clarify that, the first ending. I wasn’t ready to let them go. After some time had passed, I sat down again and gave their story the ending I felt they needed.   Maybe the end I needed.

Susi:   If your book could be turned into a movie, who would you cast? Did you have any muses for your characters?

Victoria: I would die if LOVE LIKE THE MOVIES became a movie. Seriously, on set I would become the character Honey from Notting Hill when she meets the famous Anna Scott. “Oh God, this is one of those key moments in life, when it’s possible you can be really, genuinely cool – and I’m failing 100%.”

My character muses are all too old to play them! I hate saying that, but it’s true. So for an actual movie, we’d need to find younger versions of who I envisioned. My muse for Shane has always been a mixture of Hugh Dancy’s speech and mannerisms from Confessions of a Shopaholic, out in 2009, and the ridiculously handsome smile of James Marsden. Oh, readers have mentioned Richard Madden for Shane. He’s about the right age, right? He works.
Bradley is blond and broad. Paul Walker was my original muse. So sad that we lost him. So for a movie maybe Chris Hemsworth? He’s 30, he could play Bradley. My muse for Tonya was Judy Greer, but she’s just a bit younger than me, so that doesn’t work. And Kensington I never had a muse because she’s you, the reader, and hopefully the story is experienced as if you’re in her head. But right, casting for a movie… I do love Emma Stone.

Susi:  Your title is perfect.  Did you write the story with this title in mind or did it evolve as you wrote?

Victoria:
Love Like The Movies was written under another name and changed at the very last minute. We played around with a few ideas, but ultimately I have to give credit to my fabulous agent, Jenny Bent for this title, and I agree that it captures the story perfectly.

Susi:  Are you working on any other writing projects now?  (I loved your writing so I hope so)

Victoria:  I am. It’s a modern remake, loosely based on a 1960’s Rom-Com, only the stakes are higher, the relationships deeper, and the main plotline is much more tangled.

Susi: Is there anything you would like to say to your reader/fans?

Victoria:  I’m just so happy that LOVE LIKE THE MOVIES is being received so well. I truly am. And I hope it inspires and reminds each of us to live our lives center stage.

Thank you Victoria for taking the time to answer these questions.  Your debut is brilliant!  I can’t wait for more readers to get their hands on it.  Best of luck on your current writing project.  I do look forward to reading more of your words.
