VALENTINES DAY – I’M RUBBISH AT ROMANCE

I have not bought you chocolates and flowers

I have not reserved a dinner table

I have not bought you a romantic card

I have not booked a night away

I have not done any of these things

Other loves will share their valentines

Other loves will sip bubbly champagne

Other lovers will exchange tokens

Other loves will declare and claim

I have not bought you chocolates and flowers

I have bitten your neck while caressing your shoulder and held you under shooting stars. I have carved your name on a tree and told the tree that I have given you my soul. I have talked with you until the dawn and been inside your body and your mind. I have kissed your book in a supermarket queue and written poetry about you with tears falling from my brutal eyes. I have bought you a dress to watch you dance and to rip it from your body to hear you gasp and sigh – I remembered your words to lull my soul to sleep. I have bathed you surrounded by candles and held your hair tight in a fist while kissing you with the awesome force of a storm. I have told you my secret childhood dreams and watched you sleep praying that you will be in my life forever. I have lit a candle in a  Parisian church and looked to the heavens when rain fell knowing your heart is mine. I have seen you grow in confidence and experience and have tasted the forever juice of your beautiful memories.

I have fucking loved you with a force beyond anything I have ever known and with a desire I did not believe could exist

I have not bought you chocolates and flowers

Because

I love you

And my life is your Valentine

A buzzing in my purse makes me realize that my phone has been demanding my attention for the past few minutes. I’m not sure how long. Fifteen missed calls from Harris, two from Claire and a bevy of text messages. He’s calling right now.

“Hello,” I whisper into the phone.

“Where are you? Please, I won’t… Just, please, tell me where you are so I can come pick you up.” He sounds frantic. In the background a horn angrily blasts and he yells, “Shut the f**k up!”

“I didn’t say anything,” I stammer.

“No, the a**hole behind me. Where are you, Edith? I’ll come get you.”
“Oak Street beach.”

“F**k!” he roars, causing me to start. “Do you have any idea how dangerous it is out there? Do you see anyone around you?”

“No. I’m all by myself,” I whisper.

“Stay put. I’ll be there in two minutes.”

The phone clicks and he’s gone. I cover my wet face with my hands and close my eyes to try and block out the whirlwind of emotions swirling around me like a violent tornado. I want to go home. Not just the home a few blocks away, but the safety of my room in Arlington.

I hear the pounding of sand, but I keep my eyes closed. Rough hands yank me into his arms, and he presses his face into the crook of my neck. Put side by side, his hands span the width of my back and curl around my sides. He rocks us back and forth.

“You’re safe, you’re safe,” he whispers over and over. It’s unclear if he is talking to me or to himself. We sit like that for a while, I don’t know how long, until he finally loosens his hold, and presses his forehead into mine gently.

“I’m sorry I ran,” I say softly.

“Of course you did, I attacked you like an animal. I was out of line.” We continue breathing in each others’ air as the breeze whispers around us. He bunches me to him tightly, my safe haven.

“You’re not angry?” I ask timidly.

His eyes are closed when he responds, “Hell yes, I’m angry.”

I inhale deeply, waiting for what’s next.

“Not at you, Edith, only at me.”

A slow exhale lets out the breath I’m holding and I sag down in relief.

“That was unforgivable of me, treating someone so inexperienced that way.”

“Inexperienced?” I study his furrowed brow, his eyes still closed.

“You’re a virgin,” he says the word with awe, like I’m an undiscovered species.

I shrug out of his embrace, jumping up to my feet. “Virgin!” I squawk. “I’m not!”

Okay, having sex with two people doesn’t make me an all knowing sex goddess, but it’s been a few years since I lost that innocence.

My Review

I love books where the story and characters seem real.  You know the kind,  like you can see yourself as friends with the characters because they are so well written, you can relate with them.   In Pursuit is one of the those books.  From the moment that I started the book, I immediately connected with the characters.  Eddie (Edith) is a very likable, real young woman.  She is starting her life and career in a new city.  Her new life comes with a roommate, Claire,  your typical spoiled little rich girl. Then there is Harris, Claire’s brother which will take your breath away and finally, my favorite supporting characters, Sean and Luke.

In Pursuit is a witty romantic story.  Eddie, is starting a new life in Chicago where her decorating business takes off. When she meets Harris, sparks fly.  The interest in this delicious male is definitely there.  As she gets to know him better, she learns that the interest is mutual.  Everything is going well for her.  Her professional life is thriving.  She meets new clients and makes friends.  Everything seems perfect. Harris is perfect.  Their chemistry takes over and there is your hot and steamy love story.

Of course, all love stories have their obstacles.  Eddie’s past and her present post hurdles in this story. Claire, the roommate, seems to have a problem with Harris and Eddie among other problems of her own.  (no spoilers)

Cleverly written, In Pursuit will keep you hooked to the Kindle (in my case).  The right amount of suspense and angst make this a great read.

The story ends with a cliffhanger.  I can’t wait to see what happens to one of my favorite new couples, Eddie and Harris.

Grammy Night Bites – Recipe – Mini Manchego Tarts

I love watching the Grammy awards each year.  One quick and easy recipe anyone can make and enjoy while watching this star studded event is called  Mini Manchego Tarts.  Trust me, you will love them.

I just made my first batch.  These are samples.  Yummy!!

First you have to make the Romesco Dip.

Quick and easy, follow these steps.

Pulse together 1 cup of roasted red peppers, 3 garlic cloves, a pinch or more of red pepper flakes, 1 teaspoon of red wine vinegar, 1/3 cup of toasted almonds and 1/3 cup of olive oil in a food processor until everything is combined and finely chopped.  That’s it!    (Keep in the refrigerator if not using right away)

For the Machego Tarts:

Purchase  mini phyllo dough shells from your market (frozen food section)   

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

2. Place shells on a baking sheet. Spoon in Romesco dip into phyllo dough shell.

3. Top with a cube of/or shredded manchego cheese.

4. Bake until cheese melts. (about 7 minutes)

5. Top with chopped parsley.

A Gentleman’s Affair by A.J.Linn

Donovan Hart is handsome, wealthy, successful, and single. While his single status has always been something he’s coveted, enjoyed, and exploited, now his attitude is changing. The former Malibu playboy has been set up, fixed up, felt up and is now fed up. At the age of 32, he is ready to settle down and find the girl of his dreams. Can he escape his sordid past and move forward, or will it keep him from finding his unico vero amore, his one true love? Unlucky in love in the past, he begins his search, filled with humor, heartbreak, and hope…for the one.

My Review

Reading books written in the male point of view are becoming my favorites.  A Gentleman’s Affair by A.J. Linn is the story of the sexy bachelor Donovan Hart told through his point of view.  I must say, getting inside the mind of this eligible bachelor makes this story a funny, witty and sexy read.

So tell me, who doesn’t love a handsome wealthy bachelor?  I for one love them.  Add food and wine to his list of interests, and he is a real winner to me.  Donovan, well, he fits that description and has it all in my eyes which is why I loved reading his story.

This story is written in a way that the reader follows Donovan’s dating as well as business ventures.  His dating adventures turned out to be some of my favorite parts of the book.   Now that Donovan is finally ready to find “the one” perfect woman, finding her proves to be quite entertaining.  You too will laugh at his dates/encounters with women.

I also love a man with goals and dreams.  Donovan, already successful is working on his dream, his new hotel in Vegas.  Accomplishing his dream is important and the reader participates in this journey as well.  I enjoyed the right amount of balance in his personal and business life as he narrates his story.

While Donovan’s dating adventures may not have resulted in finding “the one” a certain woman working for him captures his attention.  His own rules about dating people he works with poses a problem.  After spending some time with her on the business side of his life, he realizes he is interested in her.  “I will not admit it, but I am interested.  Fuck my rules. Rules are made to be broken. “ Donovan, gotta love him, breaks his own rule.

Scarlett, the woman who has captured his eye is beautiful, witty and sexy. She changes Donovan’s life.  Their chemistry is obvious. They are flirty and fun and are perfect for each other.  While both Scarlett and Donovan keep unknown secrets from each other, their relationship flourishes.

In the end of this first book, Donovan’s secret is still unknown and neither is Scarlett’s past.  Donovan is finally ready to confess his feelings. I’ll leave it at that, no spoilers here. You will have to read it for yourself.

Fortunately, book 2,  A Gentleman’s Secret (review coming soon) is available already so you can get right to reading it and discover their secrets/past and what happens to Donovan and Scarlett.

I recommend this book.  I enjoyed reading the inner dialogue and the story of this flirty, sexy and witty guy as he experienced it and I am sure you will too.

I gave this book 5 stars.

 Some of my favorite Lines/Inner Dialogue

Most of the girls were very good in bed…very bad out of it. I want it all, I suppose.  The whole package. The mother of my children. The love that my parents shared during their marriage. I have gone from playboy to romantic seeker of love. Who knew that it could happen to me?

 

I have now decided that dating and searching for “the one” will probably be the death of me.

 

Whoever tries to tell you that men are more sexually driven than women is extremely delusional. Women clearly have it all over us men, and they are in my opinion filthier, and naughtier than God, species.  The are just—usually? —more discrete about it. Not that I’m complaining. I do like that about them.  This… is just odd. 

 

I must admit that the thought of seeing her always seems to bring a shit-eating grin to my face. I know, I know. The fucking rule. Maybe I’ll take her off the job so that I can date her.

 

“Steaks sound good to me,” I choke the words out, still stunned by the wink from the hot girl that I’m doing business with and am not allowed to flirt with…Ugh.

I should have titled this chapter “Ugh.”

 

Her eyes scan the diner then stop on mine. We have what is known as a “moment.” I have never had one of those before. I have heard about them though. I have to admit that it was actually pretty cool.

 

The things that a real gentleman will do… to impress the right girl.

 

“Well, I appreciate your honesty, but your past is really none of my business.  Everyone has a few secrets.” I certainly do…

Old Donovan would throw her down on the bed and ravish away. New Donovan wants everything, and I do mean everything, to be different.

 

“Time for dessert, baby girl.”

“Yes, baby. I’m the whipped cream and you are the cherry.” “All I want to hear from that mouth is you moaning.”

 

My mind is exploding with good stuff this morning. Maybe it’s due to Scarlett and her expert oral techniques, or maybe…just maybe, it’s because I have finally found the girl of my dreams.

Sunday Update~Coming Soon

Happy Sunday!

As my vacation comes to an end, I am looking back at all of the books that I read these past two weeks and can’t wait to share with you. I will be busy writing reviews for the next few days.

I also want to thank all of you for following and reading my new blog.  You are all awesome!!

What did I read?

Well, my Christmas present to myself came in the form of a book and Jack F’n Carter.  I read The Sweetest Game by Jennifer Sterling.

I also read A Beautiful Wedding by Jamie McGuire.  This third book made the series complete!

The funniest read this vacation came from Marie Coulson.  I read Diary of a Dieter.  I loved it and you will too.

Finally, I reread A Gentleman’s Affair by A.J. Linn so I can give it the review it deserves.  I had originally read it back in August while on a beach vacation.  I needed to refresh my memory as I am now reading A Gentleman’s Secret, his latest book.

My Review

Tapas & Spanish is filled with truly delicious Spanish recipes from every part of Spain.  The recipes are easy to follow and are accompanied by stunning photographs.

One family favorite at my house is the Chicken with lemon and Garlic.  While it is listed as a tapas dish, I make it in large quantities and my family devours it.

Honestly, I haven’t made a recipe from this cookbook that my family hasn’t liked.
